Family Voices Maine
Beverly Baker
Phone: (207) 582-2504
E-mail: bbaker@mpf.org
Web: http://www.mpf.org SPIN/FamilyVoices/MaineFV.html
This has been a busy year for Family Voices in Maine, which might soon become a formal Family Voices Chapter. With partners at the PTI, UAP, P&A, and Self-Advocates, Family Voices has helped establish Regional Family Support Councils. Meanwhile, family leaders work with the Children's Hospital and a new Pediatric Hospice Program to develop family supports that will include a Parent-to-Parent component. Managed care provides families with resources and increases the likelihood of providing a medical home by keeping primary care physicians involved. On the other hand, under managed care, families in Maine have difficulty getting referrals, changing providers, getting records transferred and finding pediatric specialists. Perhaps the biggest challenges remain lack of service coordination, finding funding for home services and finding and retaining good home care providers. Getting to providers/services is a major problem in rural parts of Maine because transportation is not available.
